Starting in medieval times in Sicily, this delicious Italian treat has brought happiness all over the world with just a few bites. Cannoli are made by frying dough around a cylindrical pole and filling the cooled dough with sweetened ricotta cheese. Traditionally, cannoli are&nbsp;made with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/lifestyle\/food-dining\/2012\/08\/21\/from-taste-size-cannoli-have-become-americanized\/0yvDPiBvnesZ88KNt0PCgO\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">sheep&#8217;s milk cheese<\/a>&nbsp;for a tangy texture, but more modern versions use cow&#8217;s milk <a href=\"\/cheese-library\/Ricotta-Bellwether-Farms\" target=\"_blank\">ricotta<\/a> or even pastry creme to fill the shells.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cannoli date&nbsp;back to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodtimeline.org\/foodpies.html#cannoli\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Carnival<\/a> (Mardi Gras) in Southern Italy where it became the king of desserts at the time. As the treat migrated north, Naples introduced rose or orange essences into the ricotta filling along with<span style=\"color: #000000;\">&nbsp;cinnamon, candied fruit, pistachios, or&nbsp;chocolate to bookend the sweet ricotta. As Italians immigrated, so did the cannoli.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now, the cannoli can be found all over the world in a variety of flavors with different add-ins to fit different tastes. <a href=\"http:\/\/wallstcheatsheet.com\/life\/7-cannoli-hotspots-in-the-u-s.html\/?a=viewall\" target=\"_blank\">According to Wall Street Cheat Sheet<\/a>, some of the best places in America to find this cheesy treat are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1. D&#8217;Amato Bakery in Chicago<\/h3>\n<p>This bakery is able to spit out over 1,000 cannoli a week with multiple variations including a chocolate cannoli made with semi-sweet chocolate, dipped in pistachios.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piccionepastry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Piccione Pastry<\/a> in&nbsp;St. Louis&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>Not only have they honored the time tested traditional cannoli, they have branched out with seasonal flavors, a &#8220;lighter&#8221; filling, and also even a gluten-free variety.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>3. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caffepalermo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Caffe Palermo<\/a> in New York City&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>They are able to stick to what they know best and produce a traditional, flakey and rich cannoli that has kept them in business since 1973.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mikespastry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike&#8217;s Pastry<\/a> in Boston&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>With a bigger than average shell size, their cannoli has become a staple, along with the long lines out the door.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>5. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holycannoliseattle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Holy Cannoli<\/a> in Seattle&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>A total cannoli remix.
