This year, the 18th biennial United States Championship Cheese contest will take place from March 17&ndash;19 at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Our Web Editor, Amy, offers a tip to anyone struggling to keep the name of this competition straight: \u201cTo remember the correct order of words in the name, go alphabetically with the C words.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wischeesemakersassn.org\" target=\"_blank\">Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association<\/a> hosts either the World Championship Cheese Contest or the U.S. Championship Cheese Contest. Last year\u2019s World Championship gave first place to a Swiss Emmentaler, and cheesemakers in this year\u2019s domestic competition are no doubt vying for that top spot in next year\u2019s World contest&mdash;an American cheese hasn\u2019t won since 1988. This year, though, thirty-two judges hark from seventeen different states and include experts on not only cheese but also butter and yogurt. Walker believes that cheesemakers from Wisconsin \u201cmake it better than anyone in the world, but,\u201d he adds in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/politics\/articles\/2015-02-12\/scott-walker-throws-down-a-cheese-challenge-to-the-world\" target=\"_blank\">article by <em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>, \u201cwe do not begrudge anyone else trying to make a better cheese.\u201d And with home-state advantage, Wisconsin, the mother of all cheese producing states, has a pretty good chance. The 2013 U.S. contest <a href=\"http:\/\/usccc.myentries.org\/contest\/results?event=56\" target=\"_blank\">crowned a Wisconsin Gouda as winner<\/a>, followed by runners-up: a Vermont-made Tarentaise and a cheddar from Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uschampioncheese.org\" target=\"_blank\">contest\u2019s website<\/a> does offer \u201csecret tips for winning gold\u201d with advice on properly completing entry forms, best methods of shipping to ensure perfect samples, and rules for how to present cheese. For instance, one such rule reminds entrants <em>not<\/em> to cut their cheeses, though there are exceptions: \u201ccheeses formed in 640 lb. blocks can be cut into 40 lb. blocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SIX-HUNDRED AND FORTY POUNDS! The final round of judging is a ticketed charity event and <a href=\"http:\/\/fox6now.com\/2015\/02\/10\/eat-cheese-and-help-the-hunger-task-force-when-u-s-championship-cheese-contest-comes-to-milwaukee\/\" target=\"_blank\">proceeds benefit the Hunger Task Force.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to enter your own cheese in the running, fill out an entry form at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uschampioncheese.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.uschampioncheese.com<\/a> by February 18th. May the best cheese win.
