{"id":21023,"date":"2015-06-03T11:07:23","date_gmt":"2015-06-03T15:07:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/?p=21023"},"modified":"2015-06-03T11:07:23","modified_gmt":"2015-06-03T15:07:23","slug":"running-hill-running-road-cheese","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/running-hill-running-road-cheese\/","title":{"rendered":"Running Up That Hill\u2026 Running Up That Road\u2026 With Cheese"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s just a theory, but it seems to me that &rsquo;80s British songstress Kate Bush might have been talking about more than the complexity of gender relations when she wrote the 1985 hit single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wp43OdtAAkM\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cRunning up That Hill.\u201d<\/a> I\u2019m thinking she unwittingly penned an anthem for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shaftesburyfestival.co.uk\/gold-hill-cheese-runs.html\" target=\"_blank\">Gold Hill Cheese Run<\/a> of Shaftesbury, England. <\/p>\n<p>What exactly <em>is<\/em> the Gold Hill Cheese Run? While the good people of Gloucestershire opt to <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-bites\/cheese-and-people-keep-on-rollin\" target=\"_blank\">throw themselves <em>down<\/em> Cooper\u2019s Hill<\/a> in pursuit of Double Gloucester Cheese, participants of this past Sunday\u2019s run scramble <em>up<\/em> a treacherously steep and cobbled street hefting 14\u201d-diameter truckles of local cheese weighing 45-55 lbs. Yeah, umm&hellip; this would be a spectator sport for me, thanks. <\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/67844892\" target=\"_blank\">this hilarious video<\/a>&mdash;set to Bonnie Tyler\u2019s \u201cHolding on For a Hero\u201d (competition Kate?)&mdash;makes this looks like a testosterone fest&hellip;<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/67844892?title=0&#038;byline=0&#038;portrait=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>&hellip;don\u2019t be fooled. Everyone gets in on this run. Even the kiddos:<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3bbPxoVLhkI\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>After a quick double take, and then a brief spell wondering if children from Dorset are just genetically hardy beasts, I discovered that the young &rsquo;uns are, in fact, carrying fake wheels made out of polystyrene. <\/p>\n<p>How did this insane tradition start? It is just one of the events comprising the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shaftesburyfestival.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Shaftesbury Food &#038; Drink Festival<\/a>, which celebrates Dorset\u2019s local cuisine with chef demos, live music, and street entertainment. The Gold Hill Run was added in 2012\u2014the brain child of cheesemonger and perpetual bowler-wearer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/turnbulls_\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie Turnbull<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.turnbullsdeli.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Turnbulls<\/a>, a combination cheese-shop\/coffee-house\/bistro. (He\u2019s running in the video with, yep, his bowler and the \u201cTrust Me, I\u2019m a Cheesemonger\u201d T-shirt.)<\/p>\n<p>Turnbull got the idea for an uphill scramble from local lore about medieval cheesemakers, brewers, millers, and butchers racing to get their goods to the Abbey gates first so that they would be chosen by the Abbess for her High Table, thereby fetching the best price. Local cheese makers such as <a href=\"www.westcombedairy.com\/cheddar\" target=\"_blank\">Westcombe Cheddar<\/a> (which produces a hand-crafted \u201cfive mile\u201d cheddar with notes of citrus, hazelnut, and caramel) and <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-library\/Cheddar-Quickes-Traditional\" target=\"_blank\">Quickes Cheddar<\/a> (which ages its traditional, muslin-wrapped cheddars from 3 to 24 months) have supplied cheese for the race. First participants must lug the truckles down the hill to the start line, <em>then<\/em> they have to run like the devil, either clutching them to their chests or awkwardly out to one side. The winner gets a cheese prize as well as a crown. <\/p>\n<p>So who was crowned \u201cKing of the Hill\u201d this year? That would be Barnaby Cox (sounds a bit like a Scooby Doo villain, heh?), a veteran speed (cheese) racer and three-time winner at the ripe old age of 18. He\u2019s the current record-holder, clocking in at an astoundingly nimble 18 seconds. As Barnaby told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-dorset-32930327\" target=\"_blank\">BBC News<\/a>, he attributes his success to \u201ctechnique and power.\u201d I guess so!<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Cox\u2019s winning streak was not derailed by weather, which resulted in the cancellation of one of the four heats.
