America has a new poet laureate. Juan Felipe Herrera<\/a>, whose poems explore Mexican-American identity, has gone from local farm communities of Southern California to the highest platform for an American poet. To honor Mr. Herrera, whose poem “La Eva” begins, “Remember that man with a little cheese,” we present you with poets who decided to add a little cheese to their work.<\/p>\n

A Parable<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

<\/center><\/p>\n

The cheese-mites asked how the cheese got there,
\nAnd warmly debated the matter;
\nThe Orthodox said that it came from the air,
\nAnd the Heretics said from the platter.
\nThey argued it long and they argued it strong,
\nAnd I hear they are arguing now;
\nBut of all the choice spirits who lived in the cheese,
\nNot one of them thought of a cow.<\/p>\n

O Cheese<\/h2>\n

<\/center><\/p>\n

In the pantry the dear dense cheeses, Cheddars<\/a> and harsh
\nLancashires<\/a>; Gorgonzola<\/a> with its magnanimous manner;
\nthe clipped speech of Roquefort<\/a>; and a head of Stilton<\/a>
\nthat speaks in a sensuous riddling tongue like Druids.<\/p>\n

O cheeses of gravity, cheeses of wistfulness, cheeses
\nthat weep continually because they know they will die.
\nO cheeses of victory, cheeses wise in defeat, cheeses
\nfat as a cushion, lolling in bed until noon.<\/p>\n

Liederkranz ebullient, jumping like a small dog, noisy;
\nPont l’Ev\u00eaque<\/a> intellectual, and quite well informed; Emmentaler<\/a>
\ndecent and loyal, a little deaf in the right ear;
\nand Brie<\/a> the revealing experience, instantaneous and profound.<\/p>\n

O cheeses that dance in the moonlight, cheeses
\nthat mingle with sausages, cheeses of Stonehenge.
\nO cheeses that are shy, that linger in the doorway,
\neyes looking down, cheeses spectacular as fireworks.<\/p>\n

Reblochon<\/a> openly sexual; Caerphilly<\/a> like pine trees, small
\nat the timberline; Port du Salut<\/a> in love; Caprice des Dieux
\neloquent, tactful, like a thousand-year-old hostess;
\nand Dolcelatte, always generous to a fault.<\/p>\n

O village of cheeses, I make you this poem of cheeses,
\nO family of cheeses, living together in pantries,
\nO cheeses that keep to your own nature, like a lucky couple,
\nthis solitude, this energy, these bodies slowly dying.<\/p>\n

\nYet this high cheese, by choice of fenland men,
\nLike a tall green volcano rose in power.

\nAnd pure religion reading “Household Words”,
\nAnd sturdy manhood sitting still all day
\nShrink, like this cheese that crumbles to its core;
\nWhile my digestion, like the House of Lords,
