No, not a friend who takes your last slab of cheddar when you go to the bathroom. I\u2019m talking about full-fledged, meticulously planning wheel-robbers. Italian authorities <a href=\"http:\/\/munchies.vice.com\/articles\/these-italian-criminal-masterminds-heisted-e785000-worth-of-parmesan\">recently arrested<\/a> 11 cheese burglars after they rolled off with $875,000 (\u20ac785,000) worth of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.<\/p>\n<p>Vice&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/munchies.vice.com\/articles\/these-italian-criminal-masterminds-heisted-e785000-worth-of-parmesan\">Munchies<\/a> reports the bandits searched around central and northern Italy for a suitable warehouse or factory to wheel out of. And they came prepared. Police found all types of cheese-thieving tools on them, including weapons, radios, and gadgets to trip alarm systems.<\/p>\n<p>The cheese gang stole 2,039 wheels of Parm over about two years, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilsole24ore.com\/art\/notizie\/2015-09-24\/maxi-furto-parmigiano-reggiano-11-arresti-075622.shtml?uuid=ACyGTj3\">according to <em>Il Sole 24<\/em><\/a>. If you think this sounds crazy, these thieves are not alone. Cheese is the most commonly stolen food in the world\u2014<em>in the world<\/em>!\u2014according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retailresearch.org\/grtb_currentsurvey.php\">Center for Retail Research<\/a>. Do a quick search and you will find everything from a gas station <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-bites\/nacho-average-criminal\">nacho cheese bandit in Iowa<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-bites\/nacho-average-criminal\">a couple<\/a> who stole 57 blocks from Georgia Walmarts.<\/p>\n<p>Though cheese doesn\u2019t immediately come to mind as something of great value like gold, diamonds, or college textbooks, a good wheel of parm can break the bank. <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-bites\/this-cheese-makes-the-bank\">In fact<\/a>, Credem\u2014an Italian bank chain\u2014accepts <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-library\/Parmigiano-Reggiano\">Parmigiano Reggiano<\/a> as collateral against farmer\u2019s loans. A proper wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano takes around two years to age, which can be pricy when you consider things like staff salary and temperature maintenance. Farmers producing this delicacy need loans to support them in the time between aging and selling the cheese.<\/p>\n<p>By offering up the 100-pound <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-bites\/this-cheese-makes-the-bank\">cheese wheels to the bank<\/a>, farmers get the funds to get them through and the banks have assurance that, if a farmer can\u2019t pay back the loan, the bank sells the aged wheel at market price. Since the cheesemakers are given funds to represent 80 percent of the wheel\u2019s expected value (with interest), if the bank needs to sell the wheel, they are making at least 20 percent profit.<\/p>\n<p>And this isn\u2019t the Parm you usually see in the States: <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-iq\/parmesan-vs-parmigiano-reggiano\" target=\"_blank\">true Parmigiano-Reggiano<\/a>\u2014a hard cow\u2019s milk cheese\u2014is a legally protected name in Italy and Europe. Cheese only qualifies if it is made within certain provinces of Italy and meets strict production criteria.<\/p>\n<p>So will all these wheels make it into the stomachs of hungry, cultured Italians?
