Read on to learn more!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re reading this, chances are, like me, you have adoration for cheese. I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve heard people warn against eating too much cheese, but what constitutes as too much?<\/p>\n<p>According to USDA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.choosemyplate.gov\/dairy\">ChooseMyPlate<\/a>, a consumer-facing nutritional resource, the daily recommendation of dairy is three cups, generally, for most people.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24452\" style=\"width: 672px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-29-at-10.08.49-AM.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24452\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24452\" src=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-29-at-10.08.49-AM.png\" alt=\"Photo Credit: USDA ChooseMyPlate\" width=\"662\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-29-at-10.08.49-AM.png 662w, https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-29-at-10.08.49-AM-300x154.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.choosemyplate.gov\/dairy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USDA ChooseMyPlate<\/a><\/em><\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yogurt, milk, and cheese are the main components of the dairy group, although USDA MyPlate also stresses that cream cheese, cream, and butter are <em>not<\/em> included, soy milk <em>is<\/em>, and &#8220;most Dairy Group choices should be fat-free or low-fat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since most times, we are eating\/drinking dairy in the form of cups (i.e. milk and yogurt), the recommendations are laid out in one cup servings. Since, obviously we don&#8217;t eat cheese by the cup (well, most of us) the USDA lays out what amount of cheese is nutritionally equivalent to a one cup serving of milk or yogurt.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples of a single, \u201cone cup dairy serving\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1\u00bd oz of hard cheeses\u2014think cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, and parmesan<\/li>\n<li>\u2153 cup shredded cheese<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup ricotta<\/li>\n<li>2 cups cottage cheese<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s fairly easy to eyeball or measure out shredded cheese or ricotta, but a little more difficult to figure out what an ounce is when you\u2019re cutting a slice of cheese of the block. One ounce of cheese as about the size of a pair of dice, so one serving (1\u00bd oz) is about three to four dice.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_0396.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21432\" src=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_0396.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0396\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_0396.jpg 600w, https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_0396-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/center>Cheese is a good source of calcium, protein, vitamin D, potassium, and other necessary nutrients, but it can also be high in fat, sodium, and calories. In other words, too much of a good thing\u2014like cheese\u2014can be a bad thing. What&#8217;s the big deal with eating too much cheese? Well, cheese is a high calorie food, 1.5oz (think of your 3-4 dice) <a href=\"http:\/\/ndb.nal.usda.gov\/ndb\/foods\/show\/5?man=&amp;lfacet=&amp;count=&amp;max=35&amp;qlookup=cheese&amp;offset=&amp;sort=&amp;format=Abridged&amp;reportfmt=other&amp;rptfrm=&amp;ndbno=&amp;nutrient1=&amp;nutrient2=&amp;nutrient3=&amp;subset=&amp;totCount=&amp;measureby=&amp;_action_show=Apply+Changes&amp;Qv=1&amp;Q14=1&amp;Q15=1&amp;Q16=1.5&amp;Q17=1&amp;Q18=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sets you back<\/a> 160 calories. If you&#8217;re eating double or triple the serving size, over time, these extra calories will add up, causing weight gain. Excess weight gain, as well as getting too much of some other key players in cheese (fat and sodium) can lead to <a href=\"http:\/\/ndb.nal.usda.gov\/ndb\/foods\/show\/5?man=&amp;lfacet=&amp;count=&amp;max=35&amp;qlookup=cheese&amp;offset=&amp;sort=&amp;format=Abridged&amp;reportfmt=other&amp;rptfrm=&amp;ndbno=&amp;nutrient1=&amp;nutrient2=&amp;nutrient3=&amp;subset=&amp;totCount=&amp;measureby=&amp;_action_show=Apply+Changes&amp;Qv=1&amp;Q14=1&amp;Q15=1&amp;Q16=1.5&amp;Q17=1&amp;Q18=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high blood pressure<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/Conditions\/Cholesterol\/AboutCholesterol\/About-Cholesterol_UCM_001220_Article.jsp#.VjKCEOkkg_k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high LDL (bad) cholesterol<\/a>, increasing your risk of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/GettingHealthy\/NutritionCenter\/HealthyEating\/Saturated-Fats_UCM_301110_Article.jsp#.VjKCXOkkg_k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart disease and stroke<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We are humans, not robots, so understandably every day is not going to look like the chart above. There will be some days that you have more dairy than recommended and some days that you have less.
