{"id":29365,"date":"2017-03-16T09:00:20","date_gmt":"2017-03-16T13:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/?p=29365"},"modified":"2019-07-30T13:06:30","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T17:06:30","slug":"gouda-2017-new-zealand-champions-of-cheese-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/gouda-2017-new-zealand-champions-of-cheese-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Gouda Victorious at 2017 New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzsca.org.nz\/cheese-awards\/\">New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards<\/a>&nbsp;saw&nbsp;two previous champs&nbsp;return to the top with their goudas, while a newcomer was crowned best cheesemaker.<\/p>\n<p>The Smoked Goat Gouda by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/meyer-cheese.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meyer Gouda Cheese<\/a>&nbsp;was named Champion of Champions for best commercial cheese, while Mercer Cheese&#8217;s Fifty Fifty nabbed&nbsp;highest honors&nbsp;for artisan cheese. Both Meyer and Mercer hail from Waikato, in the North Island of New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer has dominated the artisan cheese category in recent years. Its Extra Mature Gouda won Champion of Champions in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzsca.org.nz\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/NZ-Champions-of-Cheese-Awards-Category-Winners-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2016<\/a>, while its Mature Cumin won in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzsca.org.nz\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Category-Winners-2015-Final1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015<\/a>. Meyer&#8217;s previous wins include a Champion of Champions award in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzsca.org.nz\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/2013-WINNERS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2013<\/a> for its Vintage Gouda and a Champion Cheesemaker prize for Miel Meyer in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzsca.org.nz\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Category-Winners-2015-Final1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Master Judge Russell Smith described Meyer&#8217;s Smoked Goat Gouda as &#8220;an absolutely gorgeous goat cheese and a pleasure to eat.&#8221; He called the Fifty Fifty &#8220;a beautifully aged gouda, with complex sweet and savory flavors coming from the combination of cow and goat milk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another top prize went to Catherine Oakley of Winsam Farm, who made a fantastic debut at the competition. Her Just Ewe\u2014a semi-hard sheep cheese\u2014earned a perfect score from judges, landing Oakley the Champion Cheesemaker award.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s event saw&nbsp;more than 370 entries.
