It started 40 years ago in a small storage space on the corner of Central and Girard in Albuquerque, where 30 families came to buy fruits and vegetables. La Monta\u00f1ita then moved to new digs on Nob Hill. Today, that flagship and five other <a href=\"http:\/\/lamontanita.coop\/locations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">locations<\/a> in Albuquerque, Gallup, and Santa Fe specialize in all things local\u2014with a few select imports mixed in\u2014and strive to make healthy and environmentally friendly food accessible and affordable. (La Monta\u00f1ita Co-op also owns the <a href=\"http:\/\/lamontanita.coop\/co-op-distribution-center-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cooperative Distribution Center<\/a> in Albuquerque, a warehouse that sources produce from farmers within a 300-mile radius and distributes it to wholesale markets across the state.)<\/p>\n<p>Meg Creaturo helms the meat and cheese department at La Monta\u00f1ita\u2019s Westside outpost and works with local farmers and foreign markets to fill the store\u2019s six-foot glass cheese case and cheese \u201cisland,\u201d a cooler with a 360-degree display. \u201cI don\u2019t think you have to look that far to find an amazing product,\u201d Creaturo says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>culture:<\/strong> What&#8217;s your favorite local dairy product to recommend to people?<br \/>\n<strong>Meg Creaturo:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to make me pick? We have a lot of great ch\u00e8vre in New Mexico. If I had to name my absolute favorite, I would probably say the one from <a href=\"http:\/\/theoldwindmilldairy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Windmill Dairy<\/a>. They\u2019re located in Estancia, and they mix flavors into their original ch\u00e8vre. Their Chili &amp; Hot Ch\u00e8vre is made with New Mexico green chilies. It\u2019s one of my favorites. It just tastes so good with the cool ch\u00e8vre and the hot chilies\u2014and it\u2019s all local.<\/p>\n<p><strong>culture:<\/strong> What&#8217;s the best part of working in the cheese department?<br \/>\n<strong>MC:<\/strong> My favorite thing is when somebody will come in from\u2014for example\u2014Sweden looking for a certain kind of cheese . . . and I find it for him or her. I think that\u2019s one of my favorite parts of working at the co-op, just being there to talk to the customers and help them find exactly what they\u2019re looking for, especially when I get to help somebody find something they haven\u2019t had in a long time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>culture:<\/strong> Any unusual pairings you\u2019ve tried that really work?<br \/>\n<strong>MC:<\/strong> We get these great Colorado peaches every year, and peaches and blue cheese is one of my all-time favorite pairings. You take a nice tangy blue cheese to go with the sweet, delicious juiciness of the peach.
