Photographing a goat is a challenge. You might get just five minutes to shoot these lively ruminants to capture their essence.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just need a moment,\u201d says Kevin Horan, a 30-year photojournalism veteran who lives on Washington\u2019s Whidbey Island. \u201cYou need to notice that moment and capture it\u2014that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about.\u201d Over the past eight years, he\u2019s taken dozens of formal, almost anthropomorphic portraits of goats and sheep in western Washington for his \u201cChattel\u201d study. (The name is semi-ironic, Horan says: \u201cChattel<\/em> means property. The word works in opposition to the palpable personality apparent in the pictures.\u201d)<\/p>\n

A neighbor\u2019s boisterous sheep initially inspired the project. Today Horan sets up his partially covered al fresco mini-studio at locations such as New Moon Farm Goat Rescue and Sanctuary<\/a> in Arlington, Wash., and the Island County Fairgrounds<\/a>. The animals can come and go as they please\u2014the goal is to \u201cget them back in the right lighting as many times as everyone has patience for,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Although Horan doesn\u2019t want to \u201cgo to my grave as the goat photographer,\u201d he says, \u201cChattel\u201d is ongoing. \u201cI still see goats I want to photograph so I\u2019m not quite sure how to bring it to an end,\u201d he adds, with a laugh.<\/p>\n
