{"id":29845,"date":"2017-03-20T15:08:39","date_gmt":"2017-03-20T19:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/?p=29845"},"modified":"2019-07-30T12:43:45","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T16:43:45","slug":"35th-birthday-without-midlife-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/35th-birthday-without-midlife-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"A Milestone Anniversary and an Exciting Year for Zingerman&#8217;s in Ann Arbor, Mich."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2017 is turning out to be a year of celebration and change for the beloved Zingerman\u2019s in Ann Arbor, Mich.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the popular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zingermansdeli.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deli<\/a> celebrated its <a href=\"http:\/\/zing35.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">35th anniversary<\/a>. Founded by Ari Weinzweig\u2014who applied for his first restaurant position \u201cnot because he had any interest in food or business, but because [he] needed a job&#8221;\u2014met future partners Paul Saginaw, Frank Carollo, and Maggie Bayless. Weinzweig and Saginaw ultimately came up with the&nbsp;idea for Zingerman&#8217;s Delicatessen, which&nbsp;opened its doors on March 15, 1982. Since then, this Ann Arbor fixture has expanded to a community of more than 10<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zingermanscommunity.com\/about-us\/our-businesses\/\">&nbsp;unique businesses<\/a>, including a&nbsp;bakery, Korean and BBQ restaurants, and a wholesale coffee roaster. After die-hard Zingerman\u2019s fans started moving to faraway corners of the country, they would regularly call to try to have their favorite meals sent to them. The demand ultimately led to a flourishing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zingermans.com\/\">mail-order business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of those businesses is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zingermanscreamery.com\/\">Creamery<\/a>. Opened in 2001, it\u2019s the deli\u2019s source for dairy delicacies. Closed for reconstruction since July 2016, the brand new Cream Top Shop will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zingermanscommunity.com\/2017\/03\/heres-everything-you-need-to-know-about-our-new-creamery-shop-opening-soon\/\">open its doors<\/a>&nbsp;to hungry cheese-lovers on Saturday, April 29. It will continue to sell cheese and gelato from Zingerman\u2019s Creamery, and will expand to feature simple sandwiches that showcase cheese, as well as \u201cmunchables,\u201d which customers can customize with a variety of cheese, nuts, pickles, vegetables, olives, and sliced meat. There will also be expanded gelato offerings to include shakes, malts, and gelato sandwiches. Classes on cheese, cheese styles, and pairings will continue to be offered, now in a brand new public tasting space. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Creamery makes 20 cheeses, including staple varieties that undergo&nbsp;unique affinage&nbsp;methods, such as being wrapped in cabbage (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zingermanscreamery.com\/cheese\/manistique\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manistique<\/a>), washed in beer (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zingermanscreamery.com\/cheese\/the-washtenaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washtenaw<\/a>), or aged in a terracotta crock (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zingermanscreamery.com\/cheese\/pere-marquette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pere Marquette<\/a>). According to Creamery manager Aubrey Thomason, &#8220;Each process&nbsp;enhances the flavors in the cheese.&#8221; Although these unique selections are hits, Thomason lists the most popular cheeses as some of the classics: the <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-library\/Manchester-Zingermans-Creamery\">Manchester<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-library\/Detroit-Street-Brick\">Detroit Street Brick<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-library\/Lincoln-Log\">Lincoln Log<\/a> are the Creamery&#8217;s top sellers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A self-proclaimed introvert, Weinzweig often prefers little daily celebrations to a big birthday blowout. Whether that\u2019s \u201can amazing staff service interaction, a really delicious bite of a Zing Bar, or how great the cream cheese is that the creamery makes by hand,\u201d small celebrations aren\u2019t hard to come by when you\u2019re surrounded by so much delicious food (or when you find the&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zingermans.com\/Category.aspx?Category=special_tease\">spring sales<\/a>&nbsp;online!).<\/p>\n<p>When asked what cake Weinzweig would choose for the 35<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;celebration, rather than chocolate or buttercream, he spoke about its recipients, explaining, \u201cIt would be big enough to give a piece to everyone who has contributed here over the years.
