The East End Food Co-op<\/a> is a foodie paradise. In addition to the market stocked with wares from more than 150 local suppliers, there\u2019s a caf\u00e9, juice-and-smoothie bar, a large selection of local and imported cheeses, and even free fruit for kids. Little wonder that the cooperative has served the community nearly 40 years.
\n\u201cWe try to highlight local producers who not only make a great product but are also responsible and sustainable, taking good care of their animals,\u201d says assistant caf\u00e9 manager Tyler Kulp. Along with Co-op Caf\u00e9 manager Amber Pertz and two cheese clerks, Kulp works closely with the store\u2019s wide selection of wedges and wheels. \u201cEverybody gets excited when something new is coming in,\u201d Kulp says. \u201cThat can be contagious\u2014we try to pass that along to our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n

culture: What are your favorite selections from the cheese case?<\/h3>\n

Tyler Kulp:<\/strong> The Farm at Doe Run, outside of Philadelphia, makes some phenomenal cheeses, mostly from cow\u2019s milk. We also carry Stone Meadow Farm\u2019s line of cheese, all raw milk, grass-fed. I\u2019ve hung out with their cows.<\/p>\n

culture: What\u2019s your favorite stinky cheese at the shop?<\/h3>\n

Tyler Kulp:<\/strong> Taleggio<\/a>. There\u2019s nothing like it in the world. It\u2019s incredible that people have been making this product for so long (and it can travel all the way from Italy to Pittsburgh). How did they stumble upon this magic and how many centuries did it take to perfect it?<\/p>\n

culture: What cheese, meat, and accompaniment would you bring to a deserted island?<\/h3>\n

Tyler Kulp: <\/strong>The Farm at Doe Run St. Malachi<\/a>. I\u2019ve been eating it since I discovered it a few years ago. I\u2019d bring prosciutto. And then I\u2019d have to have some beer. Probably Founders All Day IPA. It\u2019s in the name\u2014I could drink it all day.<\/p>\n
