Whether you\u2019re packing a meal for yourself at the office or for the little ones at school, a portable cheese plate is always a welcome option.<br \/>\nSearching for the ideal wedge? Think firm and mild, says Darren Vanden Berge, head cheesemonger and shop manager at the Cheese Shop of Des Moines. \u201cHarder, aged cheeses travel easily,\u201d he says, and mellow curds will win you more friends at the office (don\u2019t be the person who microwaves fish\u2014or snacks on \u00c9poisses). Vanden Berge scoured the shop\u2019s 70-plus range and landed on four cheeses that fit the bill.<\/p>\n<p>We then asked him to pair said cheeses with different iterations of an iconic accompaniment (and snacktime favorite): fruit. He was more than happy to oblige. \u201cFruit adds another layer of texture and helps bring out hidden flavors in the cheese you may not necessarily notice upon first bite,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen you get that pairing right, both the cheese and the fruit are elevated to another level.\u201d Likewise with your lunch.<\/p>\n<p><em>(clockwise from top right in featured image)<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Frisian Farms Aged Gouda<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Origin: Leighton, Iowa<br \/>\nMilk: Pasteurized cow\u2019s milk<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1>+<\/h1>\n<h3>Quince and Apple Pear with Honey and Ginger Preserves<\/h3>\n<p>Butterscotchy gouda goes head to head with super-sweet pears and honey for a dessert-like combo\u2014but it\u2019s the spicy ginger in this jam that kicks it all up a notch, Vanden Berge says.<\/p>\n<h3>Finca Sierra la Solana\/Essex Street Cheese Co.<br \/>\nManchego 1605<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Origin: La Mancha, Spain<br \/>\nMilk: Raw sheep\u2019s milk<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1>+<\/h1>\n<h3>Boat Street Pickles Pickled Apricots<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI love the fruitiness of this younger Manchego,\u201d Vanden Berge says. It\u2019s got such a great earthiness to it,\u201d says Vanden Berge.
