I<\/span>n our opinion, there\u2019s no award more important than a cheese award\u2014and nobody better to party with than a cheesemaker. While researching our <\/span>Best Cheeses of the Year<\/span><\/a> special issue last year, we caught up with some of the country\u2019s top makers to find out how they celebrate a major trophy. <\/span><\/p>\n

At <\/span>Sequatchie Cove Creamery<\/span><\/a> in Sequatchie, Tenn., cheesemakers have their go-to party plans on lock. \u201cTacos and beer, baby!\u201d says Padgett Arnold, the company\u2019s co-owner. Head to their neck of the woods following a cheese competition, and you might find the Sequatchie team celebrating a win at Rosa\u2019s Place, a taqueria nearby. <\/span><\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, food is central to cheese celebrations. \u201cOur love language is making people happy through food,\u201d says Jessica Little<\/a>, co-owner of Thomasville, Ga.-based Sweet Grass Dairy<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cWe have great cookouts on the farm\u2026 just recently we grilled steaks to celebrate a Sofi Award,\u201d she says.<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\n

After clinching an award, <\/span>Nettle Meadow Farm and Artisan Cheese<\/span><\/a> co-owners Sheila Flanagan and Lorraine Lambiase usually throw a party on the lawn with pizza for their employees. \u201cOur celebrations used to be a little more exciting but we are a little older and less wild than we used to be,\u201d Flanagan admits\u2014but we love how the duo includes their goats, sheep and other animals in the festivities by feeding them corn chips and jelly beans.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Since cheesemaking is no easy task, some producers reward themselves with a little R&R. At <\/span>Haystack Mountain Cheese<\/span><\/a> in Longmont, Colo., a trophy merits a rare moment of zen. Specifically, \u201cmargaritas and a spa day,\u201d says head cheesemaker, Jackie Chang. <\/span><\/p>\n

Haystack also sends a thank-you basket full of cheeses to some of the people who have helped them along the way: inmates at <\/span>Colorado Correctional Industries<\/span><\/a>, who raise goats and provide the company with \u201chigh altitude, high-quality goat milk,\u201d Chang says. <\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

While <\/span>Baetje Farms<\/span><\/a> co-owner Veronica Baetje admits to throwing a celebration BBQ or stopping at The Dew Drop Inn\u2014a favorite restaurant in the farm\u2019s tiny town of Bloomsdale (population 525)\u2014the maker clarifies that these gatherings are fairly low-key. \u201cBeing farmers, we don’t normally pop Champagne and eat caviar,\u201d she says. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nor is having a giant bash the aim at <\/span>Vermont Creamery<\/span><\/a> in Websterville, Vt., where wins are celebrated with commemorative tee-shirts for staff. \u201cWe tend to focus on what we need to do better and not celebrate our accomplishments too much,\u201d says co-founder Allison Hooper. \u201cThat said, awards are a great reminder to the entire staff that their work does not go unnoticed.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Arnaud Solandt, president of<\/span> Montchevre<\/span><\/a> in Belmont, Wisc., concurs. \u201cAn award definitely goes to our entire team,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n
