S<\/span>et on Main Street in the tiny town of Marshall, Va., Gentle Harvest opened in 2016 with the goal of showcasing local organic products. In addition to a cheese counter carefully stocked by assistant manager Brooklynne Kiley, the self-described \u201cGrocer-Butcher-Caf\u00e9\u201d offers up a variety of farm-fresh produce, local Ayrshire Farm meats, and housemade dishes and desserts. Gentle Harvest\u2019s beautifully renovated, high-ceilinged building\u2014a former bank\u2014dates back to 1919. Today, its money vault has been converted into wine storage, while the second floor offers plentiful caf\u00e9 seating on refurbished wood tables. Locals flock here throughout the year for wine-pairing dinners, cookie-decorating events, and vendor tastings.<\/p>\n

culture: <\/strong><\/span>If you were stuck on a desert island, which cheese and accompaniment would you bring?<\/p>\n

Brooklynne Kiley:<\/strong> A wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano<\/a>, since it would last a long time and wouldn\u2019t melt in the sun. I would eat the inside of the wheel, hollowing it out to make a small boat. Then I\u2019d row myself back to the United States to be reunited with more cheese!<\/p>\n

culture: <\/strong><\/span>What\u2019s the strangest customer request you\u2019ve ever received?<\/p>\n

BK:<\/strong> To only carry local cheeses. We can\u2019t limit ourselves to just local, think of all we\u2019d miss out on.<\/p>\n

culture: <\/strong><\/span>What\u2019s your favorite booze-and-cheese pairing?<\/p>\n

BK: <\/strong>Depends on my mood. If I\u2019m having quality alone time, undoubtedly it would be D\u00e9lice de Bourgogne<\/a> and Optimal Wit, a local wheat beer from Port City. If I buy the D\u00e9lice, I\u2019m not sharing, so I have to be alone. However, if I\u2019m with friends and feeling frisky, Saint Angel with Baileyana Pinot Noir\u2014you can\u2019t go wrong with a triple cream and a pinot noir!<\/p>\n

culture:<\/strong><\/span> Are there any offbeat flavor combinations you adore?<\/p>\n

BK: <\/strong>Not sure if it\u2019s offbeat, but I love Red Dragon (a spicy, mustard seed\u2013studded cheese) on a burger.<\/p>\n
