In an unfortunate and unfair twist of fate, spring this year brought something few of us could have seen coming. Life as we know it has come to a screeching halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the US dairy industry is taking one of the worst hits during this crisis.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheese is a time sensitive product, and at the moment, artisan cheese can\u2019t compete with household staples like toilet paper and fluid milk in the supermarkets. Not only that, but those baby-producing dairy animals? This time of year is most lucrative to cheesemakers due to the animals\u2019 extra milk production\u2014without consumers and distributors buying product, cheesemakers and dairy farmers have nowhere for the extra milk to go. And if product isn\u2019t moving, employees and bills can\u2019t get paid, so facilities and jobs become casualties too.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some small cheesemakers are pivoting, turning their fresh cheese facilities into aging caves; others are offering products at steep discounts just to keep stock moving. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beehivecheese.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beehive Cheese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Uintah, Utah is offering their base cheddar, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beehivecheese.com\/products\/promontory\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promontory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at 50 percent its retail price. \u201cThat\u2019s just above cost for us,\u201d says Katie Schall, Beehive\u2019s Marketing Director. \u201cWe [did this] so that our fans could enjoy a versatile staple with a long shelf life [of 120 days].\u201d Customers\u2019 increased demand for Promontory has kept Beehive\u2019s production staff motivated, and keeps them busy at a time when work at other facilities may have slowed or halted. \u201cThis excitement has been great for morale,\u201d says Schall.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since many restaurants have closed and cheese retail shops have seen a sharp decline in foot traffic due to social distancing, financial help for makers won\u2019t come strictly from wholesale. Simply put, cheesemakers, dairy farmers, and independent cheese shops are in deep trouble.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need all cheese lovers to support our small, niche community of artisans and craftspeople,\u201d says Jill Giacomini Basch, co-owner of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pointreyescheese.com\/cheese\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cKnow that purchases of specialty cheese support family farms that provide the milk to the maker community.\u201d Basch encourages cheese fans to shop their favorites online, direct from producers, or purchase cheese at their local independent retailer\u2014many of whom, nationwide, are offering curbside pickup!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many dairy-and cheese-specific outfits are working around the clock to keep their communities informed of developments, at home and across the country. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtoncheese.org\/members-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington State Cheesemakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wischeesemakersassn.org\/news\/covid-19-resources##\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wisconsin Cheesemakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Associations have compiled dozens of resources for makers and mongers, including links to health and safety directives, paycheck protection programs, and retail directories to disseminate to consumers who want to support their local makers. And independent makers who can swing it are donating unsold product to those in greatest need: Utah\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beehivecheese.com\/blogs\/news\/helping-friends-with-cheese\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beehive Cheese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is donating thousands of pounds of cheese to its local food pantry, and donated 3 percent of its March web sales to local independent restaurants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and beverage relief funds have sprung up to combat the economic hardship faced by tens of thousands of industry folks whose livelihoods have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. Some aim to help small business owners recoup their losses with grants, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.covid19businesscenter.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hello Alice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/boost\/grant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook Business<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lisc.org\/covid-19\/verizon-small-business-recovery-fund\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LISC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which, together with Verizon, is prioritizing businesses owned by women, people of color, and those operating in historically under-served communities. Many agricultural organizations, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/farmland.org\/farmer-relief-fund\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Farmland Trust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buylocalfood.org\/resources-for-farmers\/cisa-emergency-farm-fund\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are working to support the nation\u2019s farmers, especially the smaller and one-person operations. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hipgive.org\/project\/farmworkers-covid-19-pandemic-relief-fund\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justice for Migrant Women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are specifically raising funds for California-based migrant farm workers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millions of food- and beverage-industry employees suddenly found themselves jobless in March following statewide shutdowns of restaurants and bars. People like these are the lifeblood of the cheese retail industry, for one, and need major financial support to stay solvent. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/relief-fund-application?utm_source=JBF+Relief+Fund+Application&amp;utm_campaign=20d33bb45e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_27_06_29&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_4c4ee0b07e-20d33bb45e-157188365\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Beard Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rerf.us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Restaurant Association Education Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rocunited.org\/relief\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restaurant Opportunities Center United<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are just three of the many funds established to help the folks behind the counters stay on their feet. Since a good number of cheesemakers sell directly to restaurants, helping servers, cooks, and restaurateurs stay on their feet ensures that makers still have restaurants to supply in the future.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the efforts highlighted above target specific regions, so be sure to read the fine print to determine eligibility.
