{"id":46173,"date":"2023-07-20T13:53:49","date_gmt":"2023-07-20T17:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/?p=46173"},"modified":"2023-09-19T15:08:47","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T19:08:47","slug":"the-farm-at-doe-run-wins-best-in-show-at-2023-american-cheese-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/the-farm-at-doe-run-wins-best-in-show-at-2023-american-cheese-society\/","title":{"rendered":"The Farm at Doe Run Wins Best in Show at 2023 American Cheese Society"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Olivia Haver, affineur at the Farm at Doe Run, and her assistant affineur accepting the award of 1st Place Best in Show.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/centerfold\/centerfold-st-malachi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">St. Malachi<\/a><\/strong>, an alpine-style cheese from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thefarmatdoerun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Farm at Doe Run<\/a> of Coatesville, PA, was named 1st Place &#8220;Best of Show&#8221; among 1,454 entries at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheesesociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Cheese Society\u2019s<\/a> (ACS) 2023 Judging &amp; Competition. The results of the competition were announced at a ceremony on July 19 at the &#8220;40 Years of Cheese&#8221; Conference in Des Moines, Iowa. The Farm at Doe Run received a total of 10 awards\u2014four 1st place, four 2nd place, one 3rd place, and 1st Place Best of Show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small farmstead creamery with only 20 cows\u2014as well as a small herd of goats and sheep\u2014the Farm at Doe Run produces a very limited amount of St. Malachi, so it may be difficult to find for sale. When asked if they intend to scale up production, head affineur Olivia Haver said she plans on using her platform to promote artisan cheese in general and is excited to educate would-be customers on other cheeses coming out of Pennsylvania. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2nd Place Best of Show went to <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-iq\/cheese-day-sequatchie-coves-cumberland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Cumberland<\/strong><\/a>, a Tomme-style cheese from Sequatchie Cove Creamery of Sequatchie, TN. Three cheeses tied for 3rd Place Best of Show: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-library\/Pleasant-Ridge-Reserve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pleasant Ridge Reserve<\/a><\/strong>, a washed rind cheese from Uplands Cheese of Dodgeville, WI; <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/cheese-iq\/cheese-day-prairie-tomme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Prairie Tomme<\/strong><\/a>, a sheep\u2019s milk cheese from <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/stories\/good-shepherdess-green-dirt-farm-missouri\/\">Green Dirt Farm<\/a> of Weston, MO; and <strong>Basket Molded Chevre<\/strong>, a goats\u2019 milk cheese from <a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/shop-talk\/luck-story-pure-luck-farm-dairy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pure Luck Dairy<\/a> of Dripping Springs, TX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All five of the \u201cBest of Show\u201d cheeses were produced by independent cheesemakers, a fact ACS President Mike Koch was eager to recognize. &#8220;This class of winners exemplifies the functional, and not-so-functional, dynamics in this industry we need to deal with,&#8221; Koch said referencing the challenges faced by independently owned operations.
