Photo Credit: ACS and Valerie Tobias Photography<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheesesociety.org\/competition\/judging-and-competition-information-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Cheese Society<\/a> (ACS) holds\u00a0a contest for the best American cheeses, defined as cheeses produced in the Americas. Entrants come from the US, Canada, Mexico, and even as far south as Colombia. Logistical constraints associated with shipping cheese across international borders mean there are fewer entries from outside of the US, but this year Canada showed up in full force and claimed the two top spots.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why such a strong showing from our neighbors to the north? This year there was a big effort (spearheaded in part by Mary Ann Ferrer) to help Canadian cheesemakers get their cheese across the border, resulting in the most entries from Canadian cheesemakers ever (96 in total). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First Place Best of Show went to <a href=\"https:\/\/fromagerielastation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fromagerie la Station<\/a> from Compton, Qu\u00e9bec, Canada for its <a href=\"https:\/\/fromagerielastation.com\/fromagerie\/raclette-de-compton-au-poivre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raclette de Compton au Poivre<\/a>, a raclette\u2013style cheese with a peppercorn line running through the center. This was the first time the Canadian cheesemaker had entered cheese in the ACS Judging and Competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we were not able to taste the winning cheese at this year&#8217;s ACS conference, we did get to try some other incredible cheeses from Canada thanks to Canadian cheese pros <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecheesepoet.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erin Harris<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kelsie.parsons\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kelsie Parsons<\/a>. Harris and Parsons hosted a tasting session to showcase the exciting cheeses\u2014both new and old\u2014that Canada has to offer. My personal favorite was Wildwood from <a href=\"https:\/\/stonetowncheese.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stonetown Artisan Cheese<\/a> in Ontario. Inspired by Appenzeller, the Swiss-style cheese tasted like a baked potato topped with sour cream and chives, and had a pungent, almost soapy-smelling rind. Out of the five cheeses sampled this was the one I could not stop going back to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second Place Best of Show went to <strong>Le Cousin<\/strong>, a Soft-Ripened Washed Rind cheese from <a href=\"https:\/\/fromageriemedard.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fromagerie M\u00e9dard<\/a> of Saint-G\u00e9d\u00e9on, Quebec, Canada and Third Place Best of Show went to <strong>Flagship Reserve<\/strong> from <a href=\"https:\/\/beechershandmadecheese.com\/\">Beecher\u2019s Handmade Cheese<\/a> of Seattle, WA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to importing constraints, it may be difficult to get your hands on the two Canadian cheeses in the United States\u2014but fear not, there were plenty of other incredible cheeses recognized at the awards ceremony. Below is a list of the top ten cheeses at the 2024 American Cheese Society Judging &amp; Competition (<em>listed in alphabetical order by cheesemaker<\/em>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/murrays-cheese.pxf.io\/rQr7oB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flagship Reserve<\/a>, Beecher&#8217;s Handmade Cheese<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mariana, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blakesvillecreamery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blakesville Creamery<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/calabrocheese.com\/products\/view\/smoked-burrata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smoked Burrata<\/a>, Calabro Cheese<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cherryvalleydairy.com\/what-we-make-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Herbed Rose Butter<\/a>, Cherry Valley Dairy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fromagesduquebec.qc.ca\/en\/cheeses\/cow-milk\/fromagerie-medard\/cousin-le\">Le Cousin<\/a>, Fromagerie M\u00e9dard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fromagerielastation.com\/fromagerie\/chemin-hatley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chemin Hatley Grand Cru.<\/a>, Fromagerie la Station<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fromagerielastation.com\/fromagerie\/raclette-de-compton-au-poivre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raclette de Compton au poivr<\/a>e, Fromagerie la Station<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/murrays-cheese.pxf.io\/Qyo6jA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alpha Tolman<\/a>, Jasper Hill Farm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/murrays-cheese.pxf.io\/rQZ2aR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stockinghall<\/a>, Murray&#8217;s Cheese<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/murrays-cheese.pxf.io\/OrgmeN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pleasant Ridge Reserve<\/a>, Uplands Cheese<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The ACS Judging &amp; Competition is renowned for its rigorous standards and is one of the largest cheese competitions in North America.
