{"id":9261,"date":"2014-05-29T09:33:51","date_gmt":"2014-05-29T13:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/?p=9261"},"modified":"2014-05-30T16:10:34","modified_gmt":"2014-05-30T20:10:34","slug":"visiting-the-norman-countryside-of-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/visiting-the-norman-countryside-of-france\/","title":{"rendered":"Visiting the Normandy Countryside of France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For me, a great key to understanding what makes Normandy\u2019s dairy products (think <a title=\"Culture Cheese Library: Camembert Normandie\" href=\"\/cheese-library\/Camembert-Normandie\" target=\"_blank\">Camembert<\/a>, <a title=\"Culture Cheese Library: Pont l'Eveque\" href=\"\/cheese-library\/Pont-lEveque\" target=\"_blank\">Pont l\u2019Ev\u00eaque<\/a>, <a title=\"Culture Cheese Library: Livarot\" href=\"\/cheese-library\/Livarot\" target=\"_blank\">Livarot<\/a>, cream, butter) so exceptional is seeing the context in which they are produced. How do their cheeses taste so lush and rich? I\u2019m convinced that it\u2019s at least partly because of the lifestyle. Things just happen differently here than at home in fast-paced San Francisco. The land and the people seem strongly connected, both in proximity, and in spirit. People understand and incorporate seasonality into their kitchen; farms abound; <em>Normande<\/em> cows quietly&nbsp;contemplate their&nbsp;existence&nbsp;in the fields; the weather is a significant topic of conversation. Food producers use methods that have been passed down through several generations. Simple pleasures&nbsp;such as&nbsp;watching a farm dog bounding through tall stalks of wheat, tongue out, eyes roving, are everywhere.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9386\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Kerian-blog-house-450x600.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9386\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9386\" src=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Kerian-blog-house-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"Ancient stone house in Normandy, France\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Kerian-blog-house-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Kerian-blog-house-450x600-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Centuries-old houses like these are everywhere!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>More than anywhere else, M. Cheesemonger\u2019s hometown is an example of the inescapable joining of the past and the present. This is a town that carries its history with it into the future. Only a few meters from M. Cheesemonger\u2019s house lie the ruins of the beautiful 16<sup>th<\/sup> century <em>Eglise St. Jean<\/em>, destroyed in World War II. Today, people walk their dogs along&nbsp;the&nbsp;empty walls&nbsp;and hold barbecues during local festivals. One day, I went to the weekly market in search of local honey, I met an apiculteur, M. Pimbert Jacky, who, upon learning that I was American, recounted the history of his father and village during World War II. His father, a member of the French resistance, sheltered Allied troops and fugitives in the family barn. He extended his heartfelt gratitude toward the United States, reminding me that there is much respect for all that the U.S. did for France during the war. Today, the honey he sells comes from that same family property, probably not so far from the family barn full of memories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9387\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Kerian-blog-forest-600x450.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9387\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9387\" src=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Kerian-blog-forest-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"Tree-lined canal or river in Normandy, France\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Kerian-blog-forest-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/developer83.wordpress-developer.us\/culturecheesemag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Kerian-blog-forest-600x450-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A stroll through the forest is perfect way to pass the afternoon.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Speaking of the past, we had to pay some homage to M. Cheesemonger\u2019s Breton heritage by having <em>galettes<\/em>, or savory buckwheat <em>cr\u00eapes<\/em>, brought all the way from Brittany. They were pan-fried to a light crisp in demi-sel butter, stuffed with ham, saut\u00e9ed mushrooms, shredded emmenthal cheese, and a fried egg. Old school style with cidre brut!<\/p>\n<p>For those of you in a position to find M. Jacky and his delicious honey, pain d\u2019\u00e9pices, royal jelly, and honey-sweetened candies, his business is called Rucher de St. Jouin. He sells at markets around Normandy and the Loire, but his home base is at 3 &amp; 5, Place St. Jouin, 37120, Faye-la-Vineuse, France.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be in France to enjoy simple pleasures, luckily. There\u2019s always something to love about every moment.
